We've had the X-Men, Spiderman and the Hulk (less said about this the better) so what can we expect from yet another superhero. I am referring to Iron Man. I will be the first to admit that I have never read the comics and only seem to have a vague recollection of watching Iron Man cartoons when I was younger so going to watch the film yesterday I was not really sure what to expect.

So the film starts with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) the CEO of Stark Industries which is in the business of making weapons for the United States military being escorted back to his plan in Afghanistan when the armored convoy is ambushed and Stark is wounded by the very weapons supplied by his company and captured. We get to see what Stark was up to a few days earlier and learn that Stark is an arrogant rich playboy but is also a genius who was in Afghanistan to demonstrate a new weapons system he had invented to the United States Air Force.

With life threatening wounds a fellow hostage and scientist saves Stark life by fitting him up with a crude electro-magnet on his chest to keep the shrapnel from the explosion from entering his heart and killing him being powered by a vehicle battery. The terrorists realising who they have captured force Stark to make the new destructive Jericho missile system which Stark had been demonstrating. Instead of doing this the pair spend the next three months secretly designing and building a suit of armour and a more efficient power system for the electro-magnet in order to fight there way out.

There are with any film, bits that you could pick at but overall I thought that Iron Man was a great film and a good way to spend a few hours with some good performances, some of the characters I felt could have been used more but seeing as a sequel is already planned maybe they will be developed further then.

A must see film.
